Power of the Written Word for Education

Here’s a wonderful little audio-visual presentation from the BBC that really emphasizes the beauty and power of the written word to move mankind forward:

Should anyone ever wonder at the reasons for acquiring knowledge? When watching this I was reminded of my trip to America in 2011 when, while visiting Yale University I had the chance to walk around the Beinecke Library and see one of the 48 remaining copies of the Gutenberg Bible.

It also struck me that the internet and ‘online’ world has a long way to go to beat this stuff – can anyone imagine getting a shiver down the spine looking at an old website or home page?

  1. Martin Luther King said that “Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the ligitimate goals of his life”.

    It is an example of how each word is carefully weighed in and how it forces one to ponder over it long enough for the meaning to sink in…
