Measuring Performance of Schools & Teachers

I’ve carried a few articles already here on the blog, particularly about what’s happening in the US with regard to the strong drive to be able to measure and report performance of schools and individual teachers.

Here’s an article relating to the UK response to the same issue and some of the differing opinions about the route being taken.

BBC Article

I would share the concern that paper qualifications is pretty meaningless information. My guess is that there’s a far higher proportion of masters and even PhD holders in Indian schools than British ones, but that tells us nothing about relative quality of teaching delivered.

I certainly get concerned when the perceived need for checking/ monitoring of schools or teachers leads to testing of children that has little or nothing positive to add to their process of learning and development.

Plainly this is a debate that will continue to run.

  1. ITS TRUE THAT IN INDIA THERE ARE MANY DEGREE DIPLOMA QUALIFIED TEACHERS BUT THEY ARE LAGGING BEHIND WITH THE PROPER INFRASTRUCTURES WHICH THEY NEED AS AIDS TO DEVELOP INTELLECTUALITY AND STANDARDS OF STUDENTS ,UNFORTUNATELY THEY DIDN’T GET DUE TO LACK OF FINANCE OR MONEY;THIS IS THE MAIN REASON THAT IN USA AND IN BRITAIN INDIAN TEACHERS ARE IN HIGH DEMANDS AS THEY ARE BETTER QUALIFIED AND TREMENDOUS HARD WORKING —–AS THEY BORN AND BROUGHT UP IN DEVASTATING SCARCITY AND THEY CAN UNDERSTAND BETTER THE MEANING OF HARDSHIPS AND THE VALUE OF TIME -EDUCATION.INDIAN TEACHERS CAN SWEAT WELL AND WITH LITTLE INFRASTRUCTURE THEY CAN DO MIRACLE.SEE THE RECENT VISIT OF AMERICAN PRESIDENT IN INDIA .HE ALSO RECOGNIZED INDIAN AMERICANS VALUES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF USA. SO I FEEL IN EDUCATION FIELDS TEACHERS SHOULD BE HIGHLY QUALIFIED TO SET EXAMPLES TO THEIR PUPILS .A QUALIFIED TEACHER CAN NARRATE THE VALUE OF STUDIES TO THEIR STUDENTS. IF TEACHERS ARE “O” LEVEL “A”LEVEL PASS OR THEY DONT HAVE REAL HIGH QUALIFICATION HOW COME THEY CAN BE ROLE MODEL FOR THEIR STUDENTS. THATS WHY THE HEAD OF THE INSTITUION SHOULD BE HIGHLY QUALIFIED WITH GOOD EXPERIENCE.EVERY WHERE QUALIFIED PEOPLE ARE IN DEMAND ,IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT LACK OF PROPER INFRASTRUCTURE AND MONEY THINGS ARE UNABLE TO TAKE ITS SHAPE.——THIS IS MY OWN IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS AND CANNOT BE MEANT OR REPRODUCE IN ANY OTHER WAYS.

  2. Your concern seems genuine. It should not lead to increased form of testing for children.

Let me take slightly off topic but connected concern here.
I am sure you would have tried to understand how some schools are able to maintain high standards of education and maintain school teachers equally motivated in spite of having to teach kids of normal low or mid educated parents (you would understand that then teachers cant depend on parents to teach their wards).

Kids at schools like Sri Ram etc are from well to do and highly educated parents who in turn are able to ensure right culture of establishing importance of education into their wards, provide better tools/means, arrange additional teaching and develop extra personality traits by providing high cost training or programme at door step. This in turn ensures that their wards start to excel academically or in other fields which in turn benefits school (having no drastically different (strictly job oriented) teachers than other schools) they belong to. Everybody thinks school imparted those additional skills while in reality it were other high cost means that led to development of those traits/potential of some kind in their wards. Teachers may have made slight difference but it certainly did not bring tipping point into the life of wards.

Has anybody thought why schools like SriRam or Suncity etc have most kids belonging to CEO, COO, CFO, VP, AVPs of different companies?

    Above provides a clue.
