Education as a Healing Balm

Here’s a story of hope amid vast challenges. It looks at the efforts being made to restart schools in Haiti after the devastating earthquake that happened in January.

The challenges are vast. In such a poverty stricken country a very large proportion of the children weren’t even in schools before the quake. There’s a chance here if government and voluntary organisations can create the infrastructure to create something better than before out of this disaster.

What’s really heartening from the article is how much can be done with so little when people are enterprising and committed. Also, how quickly the routine and novelty of play in safe zones and attending ‘school’ can bring a little normality in to the lives of the traumatized children, so they can begin to heal.
